Until April 29, vulnerable families residing in Hialeah can apply for Section 8, also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, which offers rental subsidies. The announcement was made by Esteban Bovo Jr., Mayor, and the director of the Hialeah Housing Authority.
Interested families can fill out the Section 8 application, which they can access through this link. To be eligible, they must have very low incomes, averaging $56,000 annually for households of up to four members. For single individuals, the limit is $39,000, and for families of up to eight, it is $74,000. This selective criterion is established by scales which can be viewed on the program’s website, accessible through this link.
Applications must be submitted by the head of the household, who must be a U.S. citizen, a legally residing immigrant, and over 18 years old. Only one application per household is allowed; if more than one is submitted, the family will be disqualified.
A total of 1,000 applicants will be approved, selected through a lottery system and subsequently placed on a waiting list. Since the process is completely random, the timing of the application submission is not relevant. However, priority will be given to the elderly, disabled, or homeless individuals.
If qualified, the family will be contacted by email, and it is their responsibility to find and select a home within the jurisdiction of Hialeah. They must also cover any difference, if it exists, between the actual cost of the rent and the amount of the subsidy.
Applicants are required to provide information about their citizenship status, disability status (if applicable), and Social Security number. If they do not have one, they must sign a form verifying this situation.
Since the application period opened on April 22, the city of Hialeah has provided technical assistance to those without internet access to fill out the form at the John F. Kennedy Library on W 49th Street in the city.
Local media reported long lines of vulnerable people who came here, hoping to take advantage of this housing support model, provided by the authorities of this region to those who need it most.
