Over 190,000 affected by the April floods this year in the United States will be able to replace the food purchased through SNAP coupons if they are beneficiaries of this program.
On April 10th, a series of natural disasters occurred in the United States, leading to floods in the southeastern part of the country. Likewise, the state of Louisiana was struck by 4 tornadoes that caused not only partial and even total destruction of several homes but also power outages lasting more than 24 consecutive hours.
As a result, many families lost most of their belongings, and the food resources they had at the time were damaged due to the power outages.
The Louisiana Department of Family Support (Dcfs) confirmed that those enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can obtain a replacement for everything they had purchased up to that point through the EBT cards belonging to the program.
To do this, they must download the SNAP-38 form on the official Dfcs website and fill it out explaining the reasons why they lost their food, which could be due to power outages, fire, or flooding. They can also request additional SNAP funds by explaining why if their reasons do not fit into any of the previous categories.
The form can be sent by email or delivered in person at the Department’s offices. Applicants must prove that they were without electricity for more than 24 consecutive hours for their request to be valid. The deadline for submitting claims is 10 days after the event or disaster. In this case, interested parties have until April 20th to request the replacement.
The SNAP program aims to help low-income individuals purchase food. It is a federal program managed by state agencies. Those interested in enrolling in the program must meet a series of requirements, with priority given to households with children or elderly dependents, where medical expenses are deductible.
In any case, household income must be within the program’s limits, which are calculated based on the net income they produce and the size of the household, so they can vary depending on each case. Individuals without a fixed residence can also apply to benefit from the program.
