Flights from the United States to Cuba: These are the NEW Checked Baggage Prices

Several of the U.S. airlines operating to Cuba have established new prices for checked baggage. This update, sourced directly from the official sites of these airlines, announces a minimal, but crucial increase that could affect travelers flying from or to the U.S. in the near future.

American Airlines’ Updated Baggage Fees

As of February 20, 2024, American Airlines announced an update to its baggage fees. The first bag in economy class for domestic flights is now priced at $40. The fee for a second bag or suitcase varies between $45 and $50, depending on whether the payment is made online or at the airport terminal, marking a $5 increase from previous rates.

American Airlines has specified for travelers to Cuba that they can check up to 2 suitcases with a maximum weight of 70 pounds (32 kgs) per suitcase, in addition to 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item. It’s important to note that “all baggage charges are non-refundable and apply per person, at each check-in location, in each direction, even if you purchase or obtain an upgrade that includes free checked baggage.”

In case of an incorrect charge, it’s advised to contact an American representative within 45 days for inquiries or to claim a refund.

Delta Airlines Increases Baggage Prices

Delta Airlines also announced an increase in checked baggage prices effective March 5, 2024. This adjustment of $5 applies to nearly all its domestic routes and for short international distances, varying by route and fare class.

The first checked bag is now $35, including a weight limit of 50 pounds (23 kg) per leg, with 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item still included at no extra charge. The second bag must also be under 50 pounds (23 kg) and will cost $45.

United Airlines’ New Baggage Charges

United Airlines updated its baggage charges on February 24, 2024. Like its counterparts, this adjustment represented a $5 increase. The fee for the first bag on domestic economy flights is set at $40, with the second bag priced between $45 and $50, depending on the payment method.

Other airlines, including Jetblue and Alaska Airlines, have also revised their baggage fee structures, indicating a broader trend among carriers operating to and from Cuba.
