There is no doubt that stimulus checks provide financial relief to many American households in need. But what happens if they are eliminated? Unfortunately, this is already a reality, as several states in the U.S. have banned them. If you were part of the beneficiary community, continue reading to see if you are affected.
Although many states announced their intention to maintain economic aid programs at the beginning of 2024, by the middle of the second quarter of the year, these decisions have been revoked. Much of the reasoning is based on the country’s economic situation, which is not in a period of prosperity.
Recent inflation figures have influenced the decision to condition guaranteed income programs. So, which states have banned them? Will there be no economic remuneration even in June? Which cities will make pending payments? Are stimulus checks still available in other states?
Currently, four U.S. states have enacted new legislation involving guaranteed income programs for the most vulnerable residents. The states that ban stimulus checks are as follows:
In May of this year, West Virginia declared a prohibition on the distribution of stimulus checks or any other monetary assistance.
Local governments in the state are not authorized to provide such economic aids to residents, nor is it possible to create guaranteed income programs for systematic cash distribution without suitable conditions for expenses.
Legal terms in Idaho also prohibit municipalities from investing money in distributing stimulus checks, nor is the creation of other financial assistance programs authorized.
Although this determination has not yet become official law due to insufficient support, the state’s purpose is clear and determined, as the current administrative policy has conceived it until it becomes law.
There is a dichotomy of thought in this regard. Some believe that continuous implementation of these payments could lead society to become financially dependent on government authority, while others affirm that stimulus checks help many low-income families achieve a stable financial base.
Wyoming also does not approve of monetary stimuli or other cash assistance programs when the government is the benefactor, to which many are opposed.
On the other hand, it is stated that cash transfers have fostered dependency among those receiving the economic benefit.
In Kansas, there has been enough support to turn the prohibition of free monetary deliveries to residents through direct payments into law.
However, this has generated somewhat controversial debates, leading to a decision to discuss the final reality in courts, with support for the bill from both Republicans and Democrats.
The prohibition of stimulus checks is not applicable to all states in the country, as some continue their economic reimbursements, and payments are expected to be made in June. These states are:
In Arizona, a tax refund allows up to $250 per taxpayer, with a maximum amount of $1500.
For California residents, assistance is available under the name Family First Sacramento, with a monthly delivery of $725, totaling $8700 annually per household.
Eligible candidates in Colorado can receive more than $800 in a monetary refund, and even up to $1694 in a joint declaration.
The annual child tax credit offers up to $500 for children under 6 or disabled infants.
A monetary refund of up to $1000 is available for this state, intended for those who filed their 2021 tax return before May 31 of this year.
This payment is made through the Permanent Fund Dividend, which recently updated information on the upcoming payment to be made on June 20, amounting to $1312.
