State Refund of Up to $9000 in the United States: Who Qualifies?

The United States is committed to technological modernization in the vehicle sector, and to promote this, a federal initiative has been implemented that includes a tax rebate for eligible beneficiaries in 2024.

This is the Washington EV Instant Rebate program, which aims to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles as a gradual replacement for gasoline cars.

Who Can Apply for the Washington EV Instant Rebate?

To apply for the program and receive financial assistance, applicants must meet three essential requirements regarding income, type of vehicle, and place of purchase. The criteria are as follows:

  • The buyer must purchase an electric vehicle, either new or used, in the state of Washington.
  • The applicant must have a good credit score.
  • The buyer must have an annual income of up to $45,180 if single. For those in a family of up to four people, the income limit is $93,600. This follows the income parameter of being below 300% of the federal poverty threshold in the United States.

The vehicle being purchased must cost $90,000 or less, according to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, and weigh around 8,500 pounds. It is important to note that plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, scooters, motorcycles, medium/low-speed vehicles, and golf carts do not qualify as eligible vehicles.

The vehicle must be purchased directly from manufacturers specializing in sales to consumers, franchised car dealerships, or used car dealers with two or more locations in Washington or those that exclusively sell electric vehicles.

What is the Total Amount of the Tax Rebate?

The state of Washington has allocated a financial fund of $45 million for this monetary assistance. The amount varies depending on the type of vehicle being purchased.

Three key aspects are considered: if it is a purchase, a vehicle lease period, and if the car is new or used. The details are outlined below:

  • Electric vehicles purchased or leased for 2 years receive a rebate of up to $5,000 for a new model, and up to $2,500 for a used car.
  • New electric vehicles with a lease term of 3 years or more can receive a maximum rebate of $9,000.
  • Used electric vehicles, regardless of the lease term or if purchased, get a rebate of up to $2,500.

When Does This Monetary Rebate Program Begin?

The Washington EV Instant Rebate program is set to begin in the upcoming month of August this year and will be valid until June 2025. Vehicle purchases or lease contracts must be made within this timeframe.

The Washington Department of Commerce, responsible for the creation and management of the program, states that the funds will be available until the end of the specified period or until the funds are exhausted (which may happen before the stated end date).
