Thermometers Recorded the Coldest Dawn of 2024 in Much of Cuba

Thermometers recorded the coldest dawn of 2024 on Wednesday, February 21, across much of Cuba, with notably low temperature values, according to a report from the Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) of the island.

Factors Influencing the Cold

The records speak of values below 9 degrees Celsius in several stations, the winter conditions were marked by the mix of weak winds with little cloudiness, and the influence of a dry air mass.

Such factors determined a very cold dawn in areas of the interior and much of the nation, with notably cold temperatures reported in the interior of the west and center, where about 14 localities marked minimum records below 10 degrees Celsius and about 32 stations had reports below 13 degrees.

The assessment as the coldest dawn responds to the number of stations where there were low records and so far the only occasion when temperatures below 7 degrees have been recorded, after the 5.9 degrees reported by Bainoa, in Mayabeque on January 1, 2024.

Notable Low Temperature Records

Values close to 9 degrees Celsius were recorded at meteorological stations of Abel Santamaría Airport in Santa Clara and Jaime González Airport in Cienfuegos.

The records that stood out as the lowest on the island were in:

Forecast and Cold Fronts Impact

As INSMET explains, several cold fronts impact Cuba in February, which are determinant in the winter conditions established on the island.

The center forecasted more coldness in the coming hours in the country, with temperatures between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius in the interior of the west and between 9 and 10 in the interior of the center and some areas of the east.
