The National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation announced the decision to suspend and postpone some events in the country, as reported by official media outlets on the island.
According to the announcement, national events currently in progress are being suspended due to the island’s difficulties with fuel limitations.
Additionally, it was determined to postpone events associated with football, basketball, softball, cycling, baseball, and basketball of all categories, which were planned for the coming days.
The note details that when transportation conditions become more favorable, participants in the postponed events will be informed about the rescheduling and the planned calendar.
Such a decision once again reveals the critical situation the island is experiencing, which is also reflected in the limited operation of public transportation in the country’s provinces and also affects vital economic sectors such as agriculture.
Frequent power outages in the nation due to a deficit in electricity generation have also been linked to the insufficient availability of fuel, adding to the concerns this situation generates in society.
On social media, users expressed concerns about the impact of these suspensions on the country’s sports future, as the events also serve as preparation stages for athletes.
Despite the above, other citizens expressed their agreement with the decision, stating that essential economic activities, which also contribute to the development of sports, such as the agricultural sphere to sustain food supply, should be prioritized.
The Cuban government has acknowledged on several occasions the tensions due to the fuel deficit and has opted for the use of electric means in various provinces as an alternative for public transportation.
