The Cuban government recently announced the establishment of formal relations between the Caribbean nation and a country in West Asia.
This diplomatic pact will now unite Cuba and South Korea, nations that will establish diplomatic and consular relations moving forward.
The event took place on February 14, 2024, through an exchange of diplomatic notes between the permanent representations of both countries to the United Nations (UN) in New York, United States.
The establishment of official relations between both countries was carried out in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, International Law, and in conformity with the spirit and norms established in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of April 18, 1961
said MINREX in an official statement.
More than six decades had passed since the two countries broke off diplomatic relations in 1959 when, after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, the island forged close ties with its neighbor, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea).
However, although they did not have such ties, they maintained commercial exchanges, especially during the stage from 2005 to 2020.
It is estimated that during this period, these commercial activities may have amounted to around 3 billion dollars.
The exchanges have taken place in spheres such as the automotive industry, home appliances, and mobile telephony, and from 2005 the South Korean office for the promotion of trade investments opened a permanent headquarters in the capital of the island.
Also, during the period, the RC Kusure foreign trade insurance company granted Cuba a credit line of 70 million dollars.
It is important to highlight that of all the countries in Latin America, Cuba was the only nation that did not have diplomatic relations with South Korea until now.
